I have already shared our group classes for the year, so now I am getting into each of the kids individual classes. Each year we tailor each of the kids curriculum to what is best for them, since we have special needs kids that struggle in some areas and are highly gifted in other areas this is such a blessing for them.
Today I am giving you a look into Ethan’s 2nd grade curriculum. On top of what he is doing listed here, he also still participates in our Mother Goose Time curriculum, because he chooses to.
Ethan is our kiddo that keeps me on my toes. He has been through 2 surgeries in the last 6 months, the first one to take his tonsils out to help with his sleep apnea, and the second was a cleft lip revision surgery.
He was also put into braces back in April to help get the shape of his mouth to the point that they can do his next surgery in the next couple months one that requires bone grafting from his hip to close a hole in his mouth that leads right into his sinuses as well at another surgery at the same time. He was also cleared from continual brain damage when they did a repeat MRI 1 year after his first one.
On top of all the very frequent medical and orthodontist appointments, he is also in many different therapies every week. At the current time he sees a psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist every week and has group therapy every 2 weeks.
We have to do OT regularly every day at home as well as practice our speech therapy. We will also be spending a 2 week period at the end of January doing AIT therapy with him which means going up to therapy once or twice a day for 2 weeks straight.

Learning Language Arts Through Literature The Red Book as well as the added readers ~ The level of the program has it’s own reader to go along with the program as well as using well known read a loud to go with the program, here is a complete list of read a louds. This has been a program I wasn’t familiar with before this year, but am so happy that it includes so many subjects and I love the way it is set up for the kids.
A Reason For Handwriting B ~ We will also do added copy work some days that goes along with our group studies. I love the fact that these are bible verses the kids are working on instead of random sentences. We continue to use Handwriting Without Tears for our beginning writers and this is what they transition to once the learn how to write.
Math U See Beta ~ Math U See is our favorite math program. Over the years we have tried MANY different programs for math, and this is the one we use year after year now and all of our kids like this program the best.
Math Facts Practice
Math Blaster Master the Basics CD ~ This is just a fun activity the kids can play to help memorize their math facts. We also have subscribed to Math Blaster online for many years now and the kids use it regularly. We have strict screen time limits that are set up in our house so these are only used during the allowed screen time.
All About Reading Level 2. We LOVE All About Reading series for kids, just like the spelling program in is multi sensorial and has been great at helping our reluctant reader learn to read!
All About Spelling Level 2 ~ We LOVE the All About Spelling series for teaching kids spelling, with our younger kids we work through the entire series before moving them onto something else. If I would have had this program for our dyslexic kiddo it would have made life so much easier. These lessons approach many different learning styles, and is a wonderful way to teach spelling!
Big Blue Book of Beginner Books as well as the Big Green Book of Beginner Books ~ Dr. Suess books are so much fun for kids to listen to, and even more fun to learn to read yourself. While we will be working through these books we also have a huge library of easy reader books that we will be practicing on every week. I let him choose what books he reads for the day and this works just fine.
Math Practice Fun
Leading Little Ones To God ~ We have been working through Leading Little Ones to God. This is an amazing book for younger kids to learn many thing about God, how he works, and how much he loves us. It is something we read every night along with the corresponding bible section on our reading.
We will also be doing group classes together, you can read about and see the group classes we have planned for the year for the kids.
Wondering what curriculum we have used in past years?
