Welcome back to another day of crock pot freezer meals for a month. I have covered a bunch of different topics already in this series. I have covered an overview of the series, menu planning for a month of freezer crock pot meals, grocery list making and shopping for an entire month of freezer meals, and yesterday I shared some of the tips and ideas on what to prepare in advance for monthly freezer cooking.
Today I am going to be sharing what the day of meal cooking looks like in our house. The first month we started making freezer meals we made 24 different freezer meals. Last month we decided we needed to make more since we ran out before the end of the month. So this past month we made
- 30 different freezer meals
- 16 loaves of snack bread
- 20lbs of garlic mashed potatoes
- 10lbs mashed sweet potatoes
- 10lbs of wrapped baked potatoes
- 5lbs of wrapped sweet potatoes
- 10lbs of cut carrots
While that may seem like a lot of food, with 6 kids, 3 of them now teenagers the amount of food they eat continues to amaze me. My mom sure wasn’t joking when she told me just wait and you will see just how much teenage boys can eat lol. We have to double, triple, and in some recipes quadruple the recipe just in order to have enough for everyone to eat.
We really have a great time working together during our monthly freezer meals. We listen to a free music playlist of christian music we realized we get with our Amazon Prime membership, we make sure to put a mixture of music on for everyone even if I don’t like the music 😉 ! We all reminisce about past meal making days and other fun times, the kids joke, and the teenagers make us laugh from just being teenagers, it is a great family experience and family bond building day.
Since there really isn’t enough room in the kitchen and dining room for 8 of us, the 2 younger ones play and sometimes watch movies while we work on the meals. It’s Cody’s job to play with and help supervise them for us, he also has the crummy job of washing all of the pots and pans.
Also getting pictures of teenagers is not a fun task. They just don’t want to be in the posts anymore, so you get the best pictures they would let me get 🙂 !
One tip I will share for cooking day, and I only know this because of the HUGE mess 5 gallons of tomato sauce and stewed can really make all over the floor 😀 ! Do not put things in your bags and walk away, they will lean over and spill!! I have seen a pin on Pinterest that shows people putting the bags over the outside of a gallon pitcher, at first I though you don’t need to bother with that, boy was I wrong lol. Lesson learned…
My wonderful husband usually fries all the hamburger (usually about 14lbs) and works on the things that need to be made on the stove. This dramatically helps my hands because frying up that much burger is not so good for the arthritis in my hands.
Freezer Cooking day means that the little boys eat lunch in the living room on the rug, which makes them happy because they don’t ever get to eat in the living room. It also means that sometimes they get to watch a little more television then normal.
Here is a look at last month’s meals sitting on a chair while we finish packing the rest of the meals.
Here is a look at them all 22 meals laid out on the kitchen table. Last month we made all the meals, made 8 loaves of banana bread, 5lbs cut carrots, and 10lbs garlic mashed potatoes.
This month because we did things differently, Dustin made 8 loaves of pumpkin bread on Tuesday, and 8 loaves of banana bread on Wednesday. For a total of 16 loaves for the month. That means that 2 loaves of each can be taken out each week for snacks and breakfasts.
The Saturday before cooking we made all of our garlic mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, wrapped and bagged baked potatoes and baked sweet potatoes, and cut and bagged carrots. You can read all about our prep here on yesterday’s post if you haven’t had a chance to yet.
On meal cooking day this time we made a total of 30 meals to put in the freezer.
Just for keeping it real purposes the kitchen becomes quite a mess while monthly meals are cooked. Here is a look as to what the stove top looks like, a big mess!!
Here is a look at just some of the dishes that need to be washed by the end of the night.
Please feel free to ask any questions, tomorrow I will be hosting a Q&A post answering them.
