Powerful and Practical Reading Intervention for Special Needs

Reading Intervention For Special Needs 2

We have now put multiple special needs kiddos through reading with great success. We only had success after failure though. Luckily we have now found a method that is amazing to teach our struggling readers and poor spellers.

I received this product for free and was compensated for this review. All opinions are my honest opinions, I was not obligated to write a positive review.

Struggling Reader with Dyslexia

We had some pretty big struggles with our first kiddo. We really didn’t know how to teach him how to read or spell because he was very dyslexic. All the regular reading programs that we used with the other kids were just not working.

People kept telling me to wait and that eventually when he was ready he would be able to read, some kids were just late readers. After he was a couple years past the “normal” reading age, we did not see any improvements. We finally decided to outsource and get him a private tutor.

As I’m sure you can imagine, hiring a private tutor was a VERY costly investment. We figured we didn’t have any other options since he needed to learn how to read. Unfortunately, there were not really many programs to help dyslexic kids learn to read at that time we though would work good for him. If only we would have had programs like Nessy Learning around then we would have saved so much money.

The tutor taught him how to read using the Orton Gillingham method. This was a new method, that I had never heard of at that time. I quickly realized how much of an amazing method this was. Within weeks he was able to start reading simple words. Over time he was able to read at a normal grade level.

Now he is my kiddo that will regularly pick up college level books and read by choice. This was something I never thought he would enjoy doing. With all the struggles he went through on the process to reading, I figured if he learned how to read that would be good enough for me.

So when we had our second kiddo that was really struggling to read I knew that we needed to use some program that followed the Orton-Gillingham method. Since there are now more resources out there that offer this learning method I needed to find something that was more budget friendly for our big family of 8. A private tutor was no longer an option for us.

This is where Nessy Reading and Spelling comes in. This program is amazing! Not only does it teach kids using the Orton Gillingham method, it turns it into an online program that kids actually enjoy. My kiddo who has really struggled with reading is begging me to get on and play it. Not only is he enjoying playing it, but it has already helped to improve his reading and spelling.

I also love the fact that the kids can work on it while I am busy teaching the older kids their school. There is really no teacher involvement, other then to look over their progress they can do the program on their own. Making this perfect for even schools!

Some of the spelling and reading rules that kids normally get stuck on, Nessy Learning turns into fun videos for the kids. This makes the learning fun and memorable. Matter of fact I will often catch Ethan playing the video over and over for him and Gabe, and both of them laughing uncontrollably. Then they will walk around repeating the rule the funny video taught them for the rest of the day, or multiple days.

Once the rule has been taught to them, they then go onto fun games that reinforce the concept taught. In the game they need to get a certain amount of answers correct to progress to the next step. This makes it so the learning doesn’t become repetitive for the kids, and they just all around enjoy it.

Immediate Feedback and Fun Reading and Spelling Games

The kids get immediate feedback on how they did on each of the problems as well as at the end of each of the lessons. This is a part of the Orton Gillingham teaching added right into the program. That’s part of what makes the program so awesome for these dyslexic or special needs kids.Online homeschool reading intervention For Special Needs-1 Online homeschool reading intervention For Special Needs-1

I highly recommend this program to any parent that has a struggling reader or speller. At just over $8.00 a month when you pay by the year, it is so much cheaper then hiring a private tutor to teach them like we did in the past. They even offer a 1 week FREE trial period, so you can give the program a try to see if it will work for you, what do you have to lose?
