Finding ways to keep kids safe on the Internet can be a struggle. The good news? These simple tips can be used by parents to help all ages stay internet safe and savvy.
The Internet is huge. HUGE. And in the eyes of a child…it’s a vast world that they just can’t wait to explore. To them, it’s full of games and fun videos and shopping and being able to message their friends. But for parents? We tend to see the internet in a whole other light.
Tips to Keep Kids Safe on the Internet
While no parent wants to be labeled as a “helicopter” parent, it’s important for parents to be aware of anything and everything going on in their child’s lives. Seeing your child and their actions on a daily basis are great, but what about those actions online that you can’t see?
If you are looking for ways to keep kids safe on the internet, here are a few tips that may be able to help accomplish that!
Have parental locks on your electronics
There are different settings to parental locks so you can control what your child can, and can’t, access. You can put timers on how long they can be online and you can even block certain websites altogether.
One other great feature is that you can control the movies and things that they watch online as well by setting up age restrictions for the viewing audience.
Talk to your child about the dangers
If your child isn’t aware of the dangers, how will they know what to avoid? Taking the time to educate your child about the scary side of the Internet isn’t a bad idea. It can help them understand why you’re taking the precautions that you are, in order to keep them safe.
Depending on the age of your child, you can even have examples for your child to read if they are old enough to understand and process. There are plenty of news stories out there about situations that could have been avoided if online monitoring were happening.
Don’t let your child leave the room to “surf” online
We live in a fast-paced environment where we’re always on the go. And this can also cause us to be distracted at times as well. If your child is wanting to be online, have them do so with you in the room. That way you are there to listen to anything that might sound different or inappropriate and you’re there to make certain that they’re not getting on any sites that they shouldn’t.
If you just give your child the phone and let them leave the room, you have no idea what they are looking at or who they are talking to.
Know all their passwords to their online accounts
Choosing to let your child be online is your decision as a parent, but one way you can help to keep them safe is by making certain that they give you their online passwords. This doesn’t mean that you have to go snooping around on a daily basis, but it does mean that if you want to, you can. That way, you are in the know about what they’re doing and conversations that they are having with others.
These simple tips for keeping kids safe on the internet can be practiced and completed by any and all parents. As long as you are taking the time to be active and interested in what they are done, you’ll find that these tips aren’t hard to accomplish at all. Take the time to monitor their online activity to help keep them as safe as possible!
