This month with our Mother Goose Time Curriculum we are learning about Aesop’s Fables and Folktales with that we received some fun colored sticks to go along with the Aesop’s Fable ~ Bundle Of Sticks. With those sticks the kids were supposed to use the spinner and play dough to learn number concepts. We decided to extend the activity and continue to use them through out our week.
Because both Ethan and Gabe are pretty sufficient in knowing how many sticks are associated with that number, I decided to changed things up a little to challenge them a little bit more.
While Mother Goose Time gives the sticks and spinner with the monthly shipments, you can purchase some of them from Amazon to make the game yourself.

Of course we started by just spinning and adding that many colored sticks, until our play dough was full of them.
After we had it filled up the boys counted how many they were able to fit.
Addition Math Games
After their free play we changed things up to challenge them a bit for some other math games while practicing addition facts.
The kids started by spinning the spinner and whatever number was spun they would add that amount of sticks into their play dough. They would then spin again and add that many sticks to the play dough as well. After they had spun 2 numbers they would count how many there were in all. Finally we would say the addition problem out loud 1+5=6.
A couple days this week when the boys had addition problems in their Math-U-See books, we used these sticks instead of using our blocks to figure out their problems. This changed things up a bit for them which is always good for kids, and was a fun hands on way to play some math games. I love that Mother Goose Time includes manipulatives for the kids learn hand on and that they can be used into other subjects.
Not only were they learning math facts and counting, they also were getting lots of fine motor practice!
