We were given the opportunity through the Schoolhouse Review Crew to review Ten Girls from History E-Book. This book contains the original 1915 book written by Kate Dickinson, and has been slightly edited by Amy Perez. Each chapter tells the story of a different girl from history explaining in detail about their life, courage, and how they helped to shape history. Many of the chapters include pictures of the girls, each chapter also has bolded vocabulary words to use with the glossary in the book, and at the back of the book they include a timeline so that readers can get a complete understanding of the time period each girl lived in.
Each chapter dramatizes the life and accomplishments of these 10 girls:
Louisa May Alcott: Author of Little women
Clara Barton: the Angel of the Battlefield
Molly Pitcher: The brave gunner of the Battle of Monmouth
Cofachiqui: An Indian princess
Madeleine De Vercheres: The heroine of Castle Dangerous
Dorothy Quincy: A girl of the American Revolution
Ida Lewis: THe heroine of Lime Rock Lighthouse
Elizabeth Van Lew: The girl who risked all for the union
Virginia Reed: Midnight heroine of the plains
Clara Morris: The girl who won fame as an actress
Here is a Sample and Table Of Contents from the book.
I had Serena read this book on her own, she loves reading and anything about history is very enticing to her!  She thourghly enjoyed reading 10 Girls From History and her favorite chapter was Madeline De Vercheres. It is about this girl who is left alone by her parents not thinking that anything bad is going to happen. But while they are away their fort is attacked, Madeline has to take charge. She shows courage and keeps their fort safe. She told me that the book has really been teaching her about some of the courageous girls who shaped history and more details about their life.
10 Girls From History is recommended for children 10+, but I’m sure children younger could use the book as well, there are some big words, so if they are younger it might be best off for someone to read it to them. 10 Girls From History could be used simply for reading but could easily be ued as a unit study studying 1 girl each week and digging further into that girls life and the historical time period, spanning over a 10 week period.
Overall this book is a wonderful historical fiction story that will teach children about some amazing girls that shaped our history, the lives they lived and how anyone can be courageous no matter who you are! I would recommend 10 Girls From History to anyone with girls, and think it is an amazing resource to add to your library!
