Growing up, I loved reading. I found that I loved to use my imagination and read books. It honestly really didn’t matter what type of books, either. I enjoyed mysteries, comedies, fiction and non-fiction…if it had words on the pages, I would read it!

As a Mom, my goal is to continue that love of reading with my children. We read a lot during our homeschooling days, and I’m a firm believer that reading paves the way for so many other learning topics as well. Just think about how many times that you stop and read SOMETHING on a daily basis. Your phone, a book or magazine, road signs, and well…even this post! If you are searching for a few simple suggestive ways to foster the love of reading for your child, here are some suggestions that just may work!

Simple Ways to Foster the Love of Reading for your Child

Read to your child every night before bed

Did you know that setting a routine of reading with your child before bedtime every night, it shows them consistency and intrigues them to want to read on their own as they get older? If you make “reading time” in your household sometime to celebrate and do together, there’s a greater chance that your child will grow up having a passion for books as well. Have fun when you’re reading together and do unique things that they’ll remember like changing your voice between characters or taking turns reading different words. If you can link reading and bonding time together, your child will always have a fond memory of happy times spent reading with their parent.

Make reading fun

Never treat reading as though it’s a “chore” or something that they have to do. Let them explore books and titles that they are interested in, and be there for them if they have questions along the way. The moment that they feel like reading has started to take a turn into more of a requirement, more than likely they’ll start to lose interest and shy away. Celebrate reading as a way to transport yourself into the story and talk to your children about how they can imagine becoming a part of the book that they are reading. If you can show your children that imagination and reading go hand in hand, they’ll view reading as a fun way to “explore” the words written on the pages.

We have been using the Reading Eggs program for about a year now in our homeschool. We cannot express how much we love the program. The kids enjoy playing games, and I love the fact that it is sneaking learning in for them. They have a wide variety of games for the kids, so they don’t get bored of the same games over and over. Due to the fact that each child is unique and at their own learning level, Reading Eggs adjusts the games to each child’s individualized learning level. This makes it so that all of the games and activities are tailored right to your own child.

I have younger kids who used the program years ago, and older kids who used it in the past as well as now. My kids of every age group really enjoyed the program. Even after a year of using it! This is one online program that I highly recommend for every homeschool class, it is well worth the investment.

  1. I love love love how many resources there are for homeschooling! Wish I could talk my husband into it. We do still work on things at home even though and this school semester are going to try out learning basic spanish and basic network engineerng. 🙂 We’ll see how it goes!

  2. Reading Eggs has been a wonderful program in my own home as well. I credit it for helping my oldest to be able to read as well as he does now. I wish it had worked with my two youngest, but it didn’t. I’m glad to see you have had such a wonderful experience with it too.
